Conditions for Happiness
( Philippians 4:4-7)
Introduction: There are many internal and external conditions for happiness. However, above all, a heart is the most important. If a heart is unhappy, even a good environmental condition is meaningless.
1. A heart that overflows with peace
1) Factors that break peace in heart
(1) A conscientious trouble caused by a guilty sense - A daughter who abandoned her mother
(2) We are anxious when we are legally accused for breaking the worldly law (Isa 8:22)
(3) A conflict from a relationship with people (Pr 14:10)
(4) The trouble of life, anxiety (Job 15:24)
2) For peace in heart
(1) We should come into Jesus (Ps 91:1-6, Mt 11:28)
(2) We should be embraced by the Shepherd (Ps 23:4)
Peace in heart is not only the base of happiness but also the foundation for solution of
2. A heart that is always thankful
1) Resentments, complaints, anger, and grief that break peace in heart
(1) When we don't look at things that we have but things that we don't (Ps 42:5, 2Co 3:5)
(2) When we compare ourselves with others whose life seems better than our own
2) For a thankful heart
(1) Count blessings that you have received - mental and physical health, homes, jobs, and present혻life (Ps 103:2, Eph 5:20)
(2) Try to make other people be blessed (Eph 5:4, Col 3:15)
(3) Speak thankful words to God and neighbors (Ps 50:23, 2Co 4:15)
3. A heart that is gentle toward neighbors
1) A heart that is not gentle - a heart is confined by trouble (Mt 18:28-35)
2) Do not repay evil for evil (Mt 5:38-42)
3) We are in debt of forgiveness under the Cross (Eph 4:32, Col 3:13, 1Pe 4:8)
4. A heart that serves with love
1) God is love - Jesus' love on the Cross (Jn 3:16, 1Jn 4:11)
2) Love is to sacrifice ourselves and serve our neighbor (Jn 13:34-35, Ro 12:10)
When we practice love, God is with us, and when He is with us, we confess, "You will fill me혻with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." (Jn 14:23)
Conclusion: People try to seek conditions for happiness in eternal factors. Things like money, positions, honor, wealth, splendor, and pride may give them some happiness. However, without internal factors such as peace in heart, a thankful heart, generosity toward neighbors, and sacrificial love to serve neighbors, the house of happiness will collapse like a house built on the sand. Internal happiness makes external factors for happiness valuable.
