The Benefits of Tongues

1 Corinthians 14:18, NIV
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

Introduction: After Jesus was taken up, 120 disciples joined together in constant prayer in an Upper Room. When the Day of Pentecost came, all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Even today, people speak in other tongues when they are filled with the Holy Spirit. At first, they marvel at this and speak in tongues fervently. But soon they stop speaking in tongues, because they do not realize the benefits of tongues. What are the benefits of tongues?

1. Speaking in tongues is the role of the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, who prays for us through our mouth.
(1Co 14:2; Ro 8:26-27).

2. We should speak in tongues when we cannot pray because of our great trouble and hardship.
(1Co 14:15; 2:10).

3. Speaking in tongues when we cannot control our heart casts out the devil.
(Mk 16:17; Ro 8:1-2).

4. We should speak in tongues when we have lost joy and peace in our heart.
(Isa 28:11-12).

5. Speaking in tongues is for our own benefit rather than for others, for it edifies the faith of the individual.
(1Co 14:4, 26).

Conclusion: No matter how nutritious, an excessive amount of food will harm our bodies. The spiritual gift of speaking in tongues is a precious blessing from God?if we use it in an orderly and controlled manner. However, we will be rejected by the Church and by God if we use it in a disorderly manner to exalt ourselves.
