Sin and the Devil
(1 John 3:8)

Sin is translated in ‘hamartia’ in Greek, meaning that an arrow missed the target. In other words, sin is like an arrow flying in the wrong direction as the will of God is the target. Though Adam and Eve knew the will of God for sure, they were tempted by the devil and rebelled against God with their devious behavior and eventually obeyed the devil becoming slave to him.

1. Adam and Eve who yielded to the devil’s temptation
1) Adam and Eve who yielded to the words of the devil
① Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?
② You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die - Eve did not quote the Word of God correctly.
③ The devil’s stern reply: resolute rebellion against God
- When you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
2) The fourth dimension of evil
① Being persuaded by what the devil said
② Looking to the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and of evil, bearing the seed of rebellion
- The fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom.
③ Believing in that the devil said, they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and of evil
3) Sin lives in the devil and the devil lives in sin.
① Adam’s fall and God’s judgment
② Becoming one with the devil, he rebelled against God.
③ Adam became an evil traitor, taking the way of sinners as the proud who made himself high before God.

2. Jesus who overcame the temptation of the devil
1) The devil tempted Jesus who was hungry with bread.
2) Be a Messiah through the ways of a human.
3) Be slave to greed and avarice.
- Jesus firmly confronted the devil with the Word of God.

3. Resist sin and the devil
1) Resist head to head sin and the devil who constantly tries to tempt and oppress us in our daily lives.
2) Do not look to the tempting dreams drawn by greed and avarice.
3) Choose your friends or the environment surrounding you carefully.
4) Look to Jesus on the cross and give thanks to Him.
5) Believe in and seek the help from the Holy Spirit who strengthens us.
6) Speak the words of victory.

Sin is living tentacles of the devil. Sin and the devil is one. Once we allow ourselves to commit sin, the devil clothed in sin immediately start oppressing us and leading us to fall.
