Thanksgiving Day
(John 3:16~21)
When harvest time arrives in the fall, we give thanks to God for allowing bumper crops by designating a special day. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the third Thursday of November in Korea. On Thanksgiving Day, we give thanks and praise to God for granting us His abundant love and grace, and families and neighbors gather to delight by sharing love and joy in the Lord. We hope that this Thanksgiving Day is a joyful and blessed day where we give thanks for the love and grace of God with all our hearts.
1. A gift as an expression of love and thanksgiving
1) We can give gifts without loving. However, there is no love that does not give anything. We can find out how much a person loves us by looking at whether or not he gives a precious gift.
2) God told Abraham to sacrifice his only son whom he had at the age of one hundred as a burnt offering to test how much he loves God. (Gen. 22:1~2)
2. How much does God love us?
1) “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God has sent His one and only Son as the greatest gift for us. (John 3:16)
2) God has granted us, who have become the children of God by believing in Jesus, amazing gifts which are “the fivefold gospel and the threefold blessing.” (3 John 1:2)
3. Do I love God?
1) Love that does not give anything is not love. If we truly love God, that love manifests itself as a life that obeys the word of God and a life of labor, devotion, and serving. (Gen. 29:18, 20)
2) Empty-handed love is not true love. (Luke 21:3~4)
God has proven His love toward us by giving His one and only Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Receiving salvation by believing in Jesus is the greatest gift that God has given us. Love is proven not with words but with actions. We must also prove our love toward God. We can do so by giving the most precious thing to God and living a life where we only love and serve God and follow His word.
