Another Counselor
John 14:16-17, NIV
??6 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever??17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.??
We are now living in the age of the Holy Spirit. No matter how long you may have been a church member, you cannot live a powerful and victorious life of faith in this sinful world unless you are Spirit filled. When Jesus was giving the most important lesson to the disciples in the Upper Room before the crucifixion, that is why He emphasized the Holy Spirit (John, chapters 14-16).
1. The Counselor given to us (Jn 14:16).
In the Greek text, a counselor means paracletos (one called to the side of another for the purpose of helping him in any way.) Especially for a criminal case in an ancient court, it was customary to have one?셲 most influential friend stand beside the person concerned and help him. This person defended his friend without being paid. When Jesus was on earth, He became this kind of counselor to His disciples. Before He left this earth, He promised that He would send another counselor, the Holy Spirit (paracletos?봳he same as another counselor) who would comfort, help, protect and teach them (Jn 14:1-3) The Holy Spirit is the spirit of Jesus. Therefore, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, our hearts become full of Jesus, boasting only of Jesus and His Cross (1Co 2:2).
2. The Spirit of Truth (Jn 14:17).
The Holy Spirit is the successor of Jesus as the Spirit of Truth. He gives us the teachings of Jesus. The revelation from the Holy Spirit is not something new at all. The Holy Spirit gives us the truth and teachings of Jesus, also revealing to us what is to come in the future according to Jesus??teaching. Also, He opens our spiritual eyes to see God's kingdom and helps us to realize the truth of His words (Jn 14:26). Therefore, we should always ask for help from the Holy Spirit. Then the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth (Jn 16:13).
3. The Spirit who dwells within us (Jn 14:16).
The Holy Spirit is with all of us who believe in Jesus (Ro 8:9). God hears Jesus??requests and sends us the Counselor, the Holy Spirit. This Counselor who is sent by God resides in us (Eze 36:27) and is with us forever (Jn 14:17). He becomes a spring of grace that wells up eternally within us (Jn 4:14). Therefore, we should live as spiritual people, overflowing with the river of living water. Like the river that revives all creation, the work of the Holy Spirit should continue to flow in our lives, too.
4. The Spirit who testifies about Christ (Jn 15:26).
The Holy Spirit comes to us and carries out the work of Jesus. The Holy Spirit never lifts himself up or boasts of himself. He comes to us and makes us realize the teachings of Jesus (Jn 14:26). Furthermore, He encourages believers to spread the Gospel of Jesus all over the world (Ac 1:8).
I want you to be filled with the Holy Spirit, another counselor. I hope you will realize the will of God by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, become a person who overcomes the world and who lives a powerful and victorious life, testifying about Jesus, our Lord and Savior. I hope that internally you will imitate Jesus and that externally you will become a witness of the Gospel, telling about Jesus all over the world.
