Do You Want to Get Well?
John 5:2-8 (NIV)
?? Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie?봳he blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." 혻8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
The spirit, soul, and body of human beings have become diseased because of sin, but anyone who believes in Jesus will have his spirit revived, curses will be turned into blessings, and diseases will be healed. By the pool of Bethesda, Jesus healed an invalid who had been sick and had been left unattended for 38 years. We can learn spiritual lessons from this message in the Bible.
1. Bethesda, near the Sheep Gate (Jn 10:7).
The Sheep Gate was on the northern side of the city of Jerusalem, through which sacrifices of sheep and goats entered the city. The Israelites were thankful for God?셲 grace as they watched sacrifices being made on their behalf. That is why Bethesda, near the Sheep Gate, was a place of thanksgiving for God?셲 profound grace. However, there were invalids by the pool of Bethesda with their spiritual eyes dimmed, who were living with their eyes fixed only on their sickness, unaware of God?셲 grace.
2. Many kinds of invalids (Jn 5:3).
There were a great number of disabled people: the blind, the lame, the paralyzed, and the one who had been an invalid for 38 years. They were all lying by the pool, waiting for the stirring of the water to have their sickness healed. Today, we see many people around us who are like these ill people. Although they attend church, they are unable to see God?셲 grace, because their eyes are fixed on the negative side of everything. They have no joy, excitement, or thanksgiving in their lives and worship. They are living powerlessly, aimlessly drifting into a deep valley of frustration.
3. Jesus, the Healer (Jn 5:4-6).
In the desperate lives of these people, only Jesus Christ is the solution to their problems. Jesus, who came to the man who had been an invalid for 38 years, still comes to visit us today in our desperate situations. Open your heart and let Jesus in. When you meet Jesus the Healer, and when Jesus??healing power comes through the work of the Holy Spirit, your sickness of the body and sorrows and pain of the heart will all be healed.
4. Jesus??words of life (Jn 5:6-8).
Jesus came to the man who had been an invalid for 38 years, who had disease in the body as well as the heart and thus had given up on everything, and asked him, ?쏡o you want to get well???Jesus comes and asks the same question to those of us who are living in poverty, under curses, with disease, pain, and trouble. When Jesus calls you, give Him your confession of faith and love. You will be healed from your disease and problems (Heb 11:6).
The pool of Bethesda is where we accept Jesus into our hearts. I pray that your hearts will be the pool of Bethesda. Get up and pick up your mat of worry, anxiety, and disease. Make a decision of faith when you hear Jesus??words of life. The miracle of Bethesda will be yours.
