You Are Light in the Lord
(Eph. 5:8~10)
People with healthy identity tend to live a healthy life. Likewise, we can live a healthy life of faith when we have healthy identity. God has given us the identity of light, not darkness. Therefore we should live as the children of light so that we may please our Lord God.
1. Children of the light
Our spiritual identity was darkness before believing in Jesus. We were born in the sins, are living with sins and will die with sins. God looked at us with His mercy and sent Jesus to us. Jesus without sins was sacrificed on the cross to save us. Now, whoever believes in Jesus can have the new identity of the children of light. Thanks to the love of Jesus, we can become the children of God even we are weak and not perfect. God has established us as the light with His amazing grace and now we should shine the light over the world. (Mt. 5:14-15)
2. Fruit of the light
As the children of light, we should bear the fruits of the light. Apostle Paul says that the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth. (Eph. 5:9) Christians should do good deeds for the glory of God. By sharing our time, money and talents, we should shine the light of God over the world. Also, we should live righteously. We should not follow the standard of this world which judges people with result, but follow the standard of God, who is always righteous, even though we can feel that we are making loss and going slow. We should always live a life of faith according to the holy light of God whether we are with others or alone.
3. Light that pleases the Lord
The reason why we should bear the fruits of light is to please God. After we are saved, we belong to light. However, we tend to return to the darkness because of the habit of committing sins which remains in our body. Therefore, we should be discerned to see if our thoughts, words and behavior please God. We should not waste our time and talents to fill our greed and avarice. Instead, we should use them for the glory of God. It cannot be accomplished by our own power and ability. It is only possible when we depend on the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us and empowers us. (Eph. 5:18) Let us always be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we can become great men of faith and please our God.
