Faith like That of Little Children
(Luke 18:15-17)
Little children are the flowers of the home, the hope and joy of the family, and the future of our society. The Lord Jesus proclaimed that the kingdom of God belongs to those who have a heart like that of a little child. Only those who possess pure and humble faith, like that of a little child, may enter the kingdom of God.
1. Jesus, who cherished the little children
Jesus cherished little children, who were despised in the society of His time. In Jewish culture at that time, discrimination was so severe that women and children were not even counted among the number of people. Thus, when people brought their children to Jesus, the disciples tried to stop them. However, Jesus rebuked them and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them” (Luke 18:15?16). Just as Jesus honored the little children, we too must care for the vulnerable around us with love and restore a sincere faith like that of a child.
2. Faith, which is like that of the little children
Only those who possess faith as pure as that of a little child may enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said to His disciples, “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Luke 18:17). Children embrace the Word of God with innocent trust, without doubt. The gospel is a sacred mystery that cannot be understood through human wisdom or strength; it is revealed only to those who are ready to receive it with the simple and sincere heart of a child (Matthew 11:25). Therefore, we must turn away from a spirit of complaint and return to the childlike purity we had when we first encountered Christ. May we cast off envy and pride, give thanks in all circumstances, and live a life that restores our first love for the Lord.
3. Faith, which is humble like that of the little children
The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who possess a humble faith like that of a little child. When the disciples came to Jesus and asked who would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, He answered that unless one humbles himself like a child, he will not be able to enter. He then rebuked the desire for pride and exaltation, teaching that the greatest in the kingdom is the one who serves (Matthew 20:26?27). To serve is to embrace the weaknesses of others, to show understanding, and to wait with patience. Just as Jesus left His heavenly throne and humbled Himself to redeem the world, we too must walk in gentleness and humility, living a life of service. May we learn from the lowliness and purity of a child, taste the kingdom of heaven in this life, and, on the last day, reign with the Lord in eternity.
