Why Are You So Afraid?
(Matthew 8:23-27)
We are living in a time filled with confusion and anxiety. Just as Jesus foretold, signs of the end times including earthquakes, conflicts, diseases, and poverty are appearing everywhere. These troubles cannot be overcome by human strength. In moments of despair, the one we must hold onto is not man, but Yahweh, the Almighty God, the LORD of hosts.
1. When a furious storm came up
Just as Jesus and His disciples faced a furious storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee, there are times when sudden and unforeseen trials arise in our lives as well (Matthew 8:23?24). However, strong faith does not guarantee exemption from suffering (1 Peter 4:12). For the believer, the crucial matter is not the suffering itself, but the one to whom we look in the midst of it. Man is utterly powerless before the fury of nature, and it is only when faced with such helplessness that he comes to realize his own weakness. Rather than striving to escape suffering, we must raise our hands and draw near to the Almighty God.
2. Jesus, who is our Savior
When the great storm arose, Jesus was asleep. The disciples, after exhausting themselves in their own efforts to resolve the situation, finally awakened Him (Matthew 8:25). Likewise, we often wrestle with the trials of life through our own strength, striving to overcome them, and only cry out to the Lord when all else has failed. Yet in the face of the storm, what we must do first is turn to Jesus, who alone is the answer to every difficulty. Only earnest prayer is the sole way to calm the raging storms of life (Jeremiah 33:3). Even when the Lord seems silent and His answer appears delayed, we must hold fast to the faith that He will surely respond (Habakkuk 2:3). May we be those who rely solely upon Jesus our Savior and pray with steadfast faith in the midst of life’s storms.
3. Jesus, who calms storms
When Jesus rebuked the wind, it ceased at once, and the sea became calm. He said to His disciples, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” and rebuked them (Matthew 8:26). Jesus is the Almighty God who reigns over the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the wind. Though Satan seeks to lead us into temptation through circumstances, people, and material possessions, we must command in the name of Jesus and proclaim in faith. For the word of Jesus, who silences the storm, is filled with authority and power and can drive out all darkness and every storm (Hebrews 4:12). May we become people of faith who overcome the storms of life by trusting in Jesus alone, who is the solution to every problem.
