Heal Your Wounds
(John 5:5-9)

Most people in this world suffer from illnesses, both large and small. However, more serious than physical illness is the spiritual illness of not knowing God. Next in line is the illness of the heart. Most mental illness stems from past wounds, and everyone lives with indelible pain. However, only Jesus Christ can heal our wounds and grant us true freedom.

1. Be Free from Past Wounds
At the Pool of Bethesda, Jesus asked the man who had been infirm for thirty-eight years, “Do you want to get well?” (John 5:6). Instead of expressing a desire for healing, the man recounted his long years of pain and neglect (John 5:7). Even today, many cling to their past wounds. Deep pain grips their present, bringing stress, anxiety, and even physical illness. Panic disorders, insomnia, and depression often flow from wounds of the heart. Yet, by our own strength, it is nearly impossible to break free. However, Jesus has the power to heal. When we lay down all our wounds before Him, we experience true freedom and restoration. Only in Christ can our hearts be mended and our despair turned into hope.

2. Jesus , the Healer
To the man bound by thirty-eight years of despair, Jesus declared, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” (John 5:8). By obeying the Lord’s command, the man rose, leaving behind his brokenness and stepping into new life. The words of Jesus hold the power to raise even the dead. To the widow of Nain’s son, He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” and the young man immediately came back to life (Luke 7:14). Today, Jesus speaks the same to us. To get up from despair, from failure, from bitterness, from wounds of the past. “Pick up your mat and walk.” This means to firmly cast aside the hurt, hatred, and burdens that weigh us down. When we lay everything before the cross, we encounter true healing and freedom. Therefore, let us come to Jesus, lay down our burdens, and receive the healing and restoration that only He can give.
