Spiritually Blind
(John 9:13-17)

There are two types of people in this world: those whose spiritual eyes are blinded, unable to enjoy God’s grace, and those whose spiritual eyes are opened, living daily in the Lord’s grace. The man in John 9, who was born blind, lived in despair until he met Jesus who gave him sight and a new life.

1. A Life Born in Despair
As Jesus was walking along, He saw a man who had been blind from birth (John 9:1). Born blind, this man had lived in despair. His condition was not just a personal tragedy; it symbolically represents all lives born into sin and hopelessness. We may be born with physical eyes, but spiritually we are all born blind. Only when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior are our spiritual eyes opened. Rather than spending our one life in spiritual blindness, we must encounter Jesus, the Light of the World, who opens our eyes and leads us into true life and lasting hope.

2. Jesus, the Light of Life
Jesus came into the world as the Light of Life. When we receive Him, our spiritual eyes are opened and we gain the privilege of becoming children of God (John 1:9, 12). In John 9, Jesus spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, applied it to the man’s eyes, and told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam (John 9:6?7). Just as God formed Adam from the dust of the earth in Genesis and breathed life into him, so too did Jesus give sight to the blind man. This miracle shows that Jesus is not only able to open physical eyes, but also spiritual ones, bringing us out of darkness into the light of life.

3. The Confession of a Blind Man who Gained Sight
The man who once lived in blindness and despair encountered Jesus and was transformed. His eyes were opened, and his life was changed. When we meet Jesus, the same miracle happens: our spiritual eyes are opened. And like him, we cannot remain silent about the transformation within us. The healed man boldly testified about Jesus even when the Pharisees condemned him for breaking the Sabbath (John 9:31?33). In the same way, our mission is to boldly share the Jesus we have encountered. If our family and neighbors do not know Him, they remain on a path toward eternal destruction. With God’s calling, may we commit to leading even one more person to Christ, the true Light of Life.
