What is Faith?
(Hebrews 11:1-4)
The secret to living a lifelong, victorious life of faith in the Lord is to be filled with the Word and the Holy Spirit, and to hold an unwavering, positive trust in God under all circumstances. The Bible describes faith as a conviction that clings to God’s promises rather than visible realities. Today’s passage teaches us what this essential faith is.
1. The Reality of Things Hoped For
Faith means believing that what we hope for and dream of has already come true. Scripture says, “Faith is confidence in what we hope for?and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1). Here, “confidence” refers to certainty. It is evidence as sure as if the promise were already reality. Abraham, even when faced with the impossibility of his own aging body and Sarah’s barren womb, was fully convinced that God could fulfill His promise, and his faith was strengthened (Romans 4:18?21). In the same way, faith is living each day by trusting in God’s unseen work. Therefore, we must hold firmly to God’s promises with eyes of faith, assured that they are already fulfilled. When we do, our thoughts, words, and actions are transformed, and the holy dreams God has placed in us will come to pass.
2. Standing Firm on God’s Word
God created the universe and everything in it by His Word, and He continues to accomplish His mighty works through His Word (Hebrews 11:3). Our faith likewise operates through His promises. By meditating on the Word day and night and putting it into practice, we walk the path of true prosperity (Psalm 119:1?2; Joshua 1:8). To cling to the Word is to cling to Jesus Himself, so we must treasure the Word above all. When His Word dwells richly in us, His power and grace flow into our lives (John 15:7). As we stand firm on the Word and step forward in faith, God will protect us and lead us on the best path.
3. Offering Sacrifice by Faith
Faith is also expressed in offering sacrifices in obedience to God’s will (Hebrews 11:4). From the time of Adam and Eve, God’s principle has been atonement through the shedding of blood. Cain brought an offering of grain from his own labor, but God accepted Abel’s blood sacrifice. This foreshadowed the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for the salvation of all humanity. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins, and only the blood of Jesus can set us free (Hebrews 9:22). When we trust in the power of His blood, we receive the grace of forgiveness, healing, and abundance. May we believe in and depend on the blood of Jesus, so that we may walk in freedom and victory and live holy lives that please God.
