Waiting for Jesus’ Coming
(Luke 3:4-6)
Advent is a season of rejoicing in the birth of Jesus and eagerly awaiting His return. Just as John the Baptist cried out in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord, we too must prepare our hearts filling the valleys with repentance and faith, straightening the crooked paths within us, and living lives ready to welcome Him.
1. Make Straight the Ways of the Lord
John the Baptist proclaimed in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him” (Luke 3:4). Welcoming the Lord begins with setting our hearts and lives in order. When we put aside sin, unbelief, disobedience, and negative attitudes and truly repent before God, we prepare a pure heart for His coming. Repentance is not simply feeling regret. It is a sincere turning from wrongdoing and a transformation of life. Such repentance brings powerful results, just as 3,000 people were moved to return and believe after Peter’s Spirit-filled message (Acts 2:40?41). The early revival of the Korean church also began with deep, honest repentance. May we be people who prepare for the Lord’s coming by straightening our crooked hearts and living lives marked by purity and transformation.
2. All Valleys Will be Filled
A valley, described as a hollow and impassable path (Luke 3:5), represents the deeply eroded places within our hearts formed by wounds, disappointments, resentment, despair, loneliness, envy, and feelings of inferiority. These valleys cannot be filled by our own strength; only the love of the cross and the power of Jesus’ blood can make them whole. When we encounter Jesus at the foot of the cross, emptiness becomes peace, despair becomes hope, resentment becomes gratitude, and hatred becomes love and forgiveness. Even our failures are transformed into restoration and victory. May every valley in our hearts be filled as we come before the Lord during this Christmas season, and may we receive the grace of a deep encounter with Him.
3. All Mountains be Made Low
To prepare the path for the Lord, the mountains within our hearts must be brought low. These mountains symbolize pride. Pride is the root of sin and reveals itself in a self-centered life. For Jesus to dwell in our hearts, we must remove this mountain. God does not delight in the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Money, knowledge, fame, power, achievements, and even religious zeal can become mountains of pride. Yet Jesus emptied Himself and humbled Himself in order to serve (Philippians 2:5?7). Therefore, we must follow His example, walking in humility. May we prepare the way for the Lord’s coming with humble hearts and deeply enjoy His abundant grace and love.
