Waiting for Jesus’ Coming (II)
(Luke 3:4-6)
Christmas, the day Jesus came into the world, is now only two weeks away. We must welcome the Lord with gratitude for coming to save all humanity. To prepare for His coming, we must straighten the crooked paths within us, humble our proud hearts, and fill the empty valleys of our souls with His grace.
1. The Crooked Become Straight
To prepare the way for the Lord, the crooked parts of our hearts must first be made straight. Just as a road can only be opened when the uneven ground is leveled, the deceitful thoughts, hypocrisy, and twisted attitudes within us must be corrected before we can properly welcome Jesus. A crooked heart makes us see everything negatively and leads us to hurt others through slander or lies. Scripture warns us against these things and urges us to put away anger, malice, hypocrisy, and falsehood (Colossians 3:8?9; 1 Peter 2:1). Therefore, we must examine our hearts honestly and repent humbly before the Lord wherever crookedness remains. When our hearts are straightened with truth and sincerity, the Lord draws near and enters our lives. May we be believers who prepare His way by correcting distorted attitudes and living lives of love and compassion toward neighbors in need.
2. The Rough Way Will Be Made Smooth
In Scripture, a rough road refers to rugged terrain that is hard to walk and barren land that bears little fruit. This symbolizes rough hearts and spiritually desolate inner lives. When our hearts become rough, stubbornness and harsh attitudes cause conflict with others. Sinful habits also erode and harden our inner character, but when we encounter Jesus, these chains of sin are broken. Harshness gives way to gentleness, and we begin to walk in peace with those around us, bearing good fruit. When the Lord’s grace touches us, God Himself goes before us and makes the rough places smooth (Isaiah 45:2).
3. All Flesh Will See the Salvation of God
The valleys carved by indifference and hurt must be filled with the love of the cross. The mountains of pride must be lowered through humility. The crooked places must be straightened with honesty and truth. And the rough path of conflict, shaped by sinful habits and harsh personalities, must be turned into a path of peace (Luke 3:5). When our hearts are made right and healed in this way, God’s salvation begins its work within us. As the work of salvation takes root, the grace of Jesus’ cross becomes evident in the lives of all believers who love Him. May we experience the blessing of soul prosperity, blessing in all things, and renewed strength. And may we welcome this Christmas filled with Jesus through brokenness, humility, and repentance.
