Be Renewed in the Spirit of Your Mind
(Ephesians 4:22?24)
The most important factor for a happy and meaningful life is properly governing the mind. Scripture teaches that the heart and mind are the wellspring of life and must be guarded above all else. Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life, is the One who renews our hearts. Therefore, having accepted Jesus as our Savior, we must put away our old selves, be renewed in the spirit of our minds, and live lives that please God.

1. Cast Off Your Old Self
Before believing in Jesus, we lived as slaves to sin, following sinful desires and living in spiritual darkness (Ephesians 2:3). However, after accepting Jesus as Savior, our identity changes from slaves of sin to children of God. The Bible teaches that anyone who belongs to Christ lives a new life (2 Corinthians 5:17). Even so, many people remain trapped in their past. Past wounds and failures weigh them down, and sinful habits are difficult to release. When temptation comes, they easily fall. Living this way, bound to the old self, eventually leads to discouragement and despair. Scripture gives clear examples of this truth. Joseph was greatly used by God because he fled from temptation, while Eve, driven by desire, fell into sin. Greed and pride are roots of sin and ultimately lead to death (Romans 6:23). Therefore, we must daily put our old nature to death, devote ourselves to God’s Word and prayer, and seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit. When we do this, we do not give the devil an opportunity to gain a foothold in our lives.

2. Put On the New Self
To put away the old self, we must first experience renewal in our hearts. This requires turning away from living according to worldly values and choosing instead to live according to God’s will. Whenever our desires conflict with God’s will and we choose His way, our hearts are renewed through His Word, and real transformation takes place in our lives. This transformation cannot be accomplished by human willpower alone. We must seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit every day. When the Holy Spirit works within us, hardened hearts become soft, and new life naturally grows without forced effort. Those who have put on the new self experience change in their words, actions, and attitudes. A life of service shaped by the heart of Jesus begins to appear. As we become more like Jesus, we reflect Him to the world around us. May we all be filled with the Holy Spirit, live with firm faith and sincere gratitude, and be clothed with the new self that pleases God.
