Light in the Lord
(Ephesians 5:8-11)
As we live our daily lives, we must walk with a clear identity and purpose, understanding who we are and why we live. Though we are imperfect, we are created in the image of God. When we rely fully on Him, we discover the true meaning and purpose of life. Let us examine ourselves daily before God and live as light in the Lord.
1. Light in the Lord
After Adam sinned, humanity was born into sin and lived under its power, falling short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Yet God loved us so deeply that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, into this world. Jesus, who was completely sinless and blameless, carried our sins on the cross and opened the way to salvation. Through Him, all who believe are freed from the bondage of sin and transferred from darkness into light, becoming children of God. Now we are God’s chosen people, a royal priesthood, called to declare His light to the world (1 Peter 2:9). As children of light chosen by God, we must shine His light into the world and live lives that produce the fruit of light (Matthew 5:14 to 15).
2. A Fruitful Life
As children of light, we must bear fruit not only through words but through the way we live. The Apostle Paul teaches that goodness, righteousness, and truth are the fruits of light (Ephesians 5:9). Goodness is expressed through mercy and compassion. We reveal God’s glory through acts of kindness, by serving those in despair, and by sharing our resources, time, and hearts with others. Righteousness is living in a way that is pleasing to God. To live this way, we must meditate on God’s Word continually, seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and entrust every part of our lives to Him (Matthew 6:33). Truth means walking in the light of God’s holiness, both in public and in private. God delights in those who live in truth (Proverbs 12:22). Living a life that bears goodness, righteousness, and truth is the path that pleases God.
3. A Life That Pleases the Lord
The reason we pursue goodness, righteousness, and truth is to please God. We were created for His glory, and in everything we do, whether eating, drinking, or working, we are called to live for Him (Isaiah 43:7; 1 Corinthians 10:31). We must not waste the time, health, or abilities God has given us on selfish desires. Instead, we must use them for the glory of the Lord (Ephesians 5:15 to 16). This cannot be accomplished by human strength alone, but through the help of the Holy Spirit. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are able to praise God even in suffering and live with gratitude in every circumstance. May you live each day as a child of light, filled with the Holy Spirit, and walking in a way that pleases the Lord.
