Overflowing Gratitude
(Colossians 2:5?7)

Gratitude is the mark of a mature believer. Above all, gratitude allows us to find hope even in despair, brings healing to a wounded past, and enables us to live today with a positive outlook. It is also the power that helps us fully realize faith, hope, and love. Therefore, we must stand on a firm foundation of faith and live a life overflowing with gratitude.

1. Steadfastness of Faith
If you have attended church for a long time yet remain in a basic or immature faith, it is necessary to reexamine your spiritual condition. The book of Hebrews urges us not to remain in the elementary teachings about Christ, but to repent of dead works and move forward into maturity (Hebrews 6:1?2). This calls us to a life of continual spiritual growth through the Word. To do so, we must break free from a faith that remains stagnant. At the center of this growth is Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). When we fix our eyes on Him, our faith remains steady and grows stronger. A life that rejoices and gives thanks that Jesus is our Lord is itself evidence of mature faith.

2. Jesus Christ, Our Lord
To believe in Jesus means that the authority over our lives has shifted from ourselves to Him. Therefore, we are called to live with joy and gratitude, rejoicing that Jesus is Lord of our lives (Colossians 2:6). People in the world look for something to depend on, yet human-made things cannot provide true peace or satisfaction. Only Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life, is the true Savior who leads us to God (John 14:6). When we believe in Him, we can move forward in every situation with prayer and gratitude instead of anxiety. As we do so, the peace of God guards our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6?7). We must continue to abide in the Lord, be rooted in faith, and stand firm. As we stand on the Word, discern God’s will, and obey Him, abundant fruit will be produced in our lives.

3. Overflowing Gratitude
We must stand firm in the faith we have been taught and live lives overflowing with gratitude (Colossians 2:7). This means that our gratitude should not be partial or occasional, but should shape every aspect of our lives as those who have been saved through Jesus Christ. When we devote ourselves to prayer and remain watchful with thanksgiving, we experience the work of God (Colossians 4:2). In prayer, we continually give thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ, and that gratitude leads to a life that glorifies Him (Psalm 50:23). When we continue in gratitude without being shaken by circumstances, God works all things together for good (Romans 8:28). May we become people who stand firm in faith each day, rely on our Lord Jesus Christ, and live with overflowing gratitude.
