Honor Your Parents
(Ephesians 6:1?3)
Life is made up of countless encounters. We meet parents, siblings, teachers, friends, and spouses throughout our lives. Yet among all these relationships, the greatest blessing is meeting Jesus Christ, our Savior. Through Him, we become beloved children of God. Therefore, as God’s children, we must obey our parents in the Lord and build families grounded in faith.
1. Obey Your Parents in the Lord
The Apostle Paul exhorts children to obey their parents in the Lord. The phrase “in the Lord” means living under the authority of Christ and belonging to Him. As those who have become children of God through faith in Jesus, we are called to follow the Lord’s will within our families as well. The secret to a healthy and joyful family is learning to treat one another in the Lord. Conflicts may arise because each person has different personalities, thoughts, and perspectives, but true harmony and unity become possible when we follow the standards of Christ rather than our own. For this reason, Scripture teaches us to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5). Therefore, we must build families of faith by serving God and by obeying and honoring our parents in the Lord.
2. Honor Your Parents
Honoring parents is the first commandment among the Ten Commandments concerning human relationships that is given with a promise (Ephesians 6:1?2). Since our parents gave us life and raised us with love and sacrifice, we are called to obey and honor them in the Lord. Obedience means listening carefully to their instruction and learning to follow it, which also teaches us obedience toward God (Proverbs 23:22). Honor means respecting, valuing, and serving our parents with love, just as we seek to honor God (Proverbs 23:25). We should care for their well-being, spend time with them, help meet their needs, and share in both their burdens and loneliness. Many of the struggles seen in families and society today stem from the loss of honoring parents. Therefore, we must first restore our relationships within the family and serve our parents with genuine love. God has promised blessings of well-being and long life to those who honor their parents (Ephesians 6:3).
3. Raise Your Children in the Lord’s Discipline and Instruction
Parents must be careful not to wound or provoke their children through careless words or actions (Ephesians 6:4). Children are not possessions, but precious lives entrusted to us by God. Therefore, they must be cared for with love, wisdom, and responsibility. Above all, the foundation of raising children must be the Word of God. Human wisdom and worldly teaching alone are not enough to guide children into lives that are upright and spiritually healthy. Scripture teaches that the Word of God is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). Parents must also demonstrate their faith not only through words, but through the example of their lives (Proverbs 22:6). For this reason, families should restore worship within the home, pray together, and encourage one another through praise and affirmation. May we raise our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, build families filled with faith and love, and enjoy the blessings God has promised.
