Jacob The Dreamer
(Genesis 28:10-15)
In the Scriptures, we find that God, at times, reveals His will through dreams or speaks directly to individuals. Today’s passage portrays the moment when Jacob, fleeing from his brother Esau, set out on his journey toward Haran, where his uncle resided. As he lay down to sleep in the wilderness, God appeared to him in a dream, revealing His divine presence.
1. A Life that faces the night
Jacob deceived his father, Isaac, to obtain the blessing of the firstborn, disguising himself in Esau’s garments and receiving the blessing meant for his brother. In his anger, Esau sought to kill him, and Jacob fled as a fugitive to escape his brother. As he wandered through the wilderness the entire day, exhaustion overtook him as night fell, yet there was no suitable place for rest. With no other option, he placed a stone under his head and lay down to sleep (Genesis 28:10-11). Jacob’s condition mirrors the state of a life separated from God. Like a pilgrimage, it is a life of loneliness, fatigue, and restlessness. Yet even in such a place, God is present. Just as the dawn inevitably breaks, no matter how dark the night, so too can the darkest moments of life become a pathway to blessing, leading toward the hopeful light of a new morning.
2. God who comes in the night of life
As Jacob, exhausted and alone, fell into a sleep, God came to him in a dream. In the dream, Jacob saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God ascending and descending on it (Genesis 28:12). This ladder represents Jesus Christ. Only through the cross of Jesus can we come to God and find the path of salvation (John 14:6). Therefore, as we journey through this world, which can often feel like a wilderness, in moments of loneliness, discouragement, or when all doors seem closed, we fix our eyes on Jesus alone. When we step forward in faith, God will open a new way for us. Even in the depths of despair, God delivers us and is always with us, never slumbering or sleeping (Psalm 40:2, Psalm 121:4).
3. God who gives the word of blessing
In the midst of Jacob’s despair, God spoke to him through a dream, offering words of hope and blessing. Although Jacob was journeying through the wilderness, empty-handed, God promised that he and his descendants would become a great nation, prospering and expanding in every direction. Through them, all the families of the earth would be blessed. Moreover, God assured Jacob that He would never leave him until His promises were fulfilled and that He would always be with him (Genesis 28:15). Just as Jacob believed God’s word and moved forward with courage, we too, when we place our trust in the Lord, will be protected and guided by Him to the end. Let us not try to navigate the wilderness of life in our own strength, but instead, live in fellowship with God, who holds us with His words of blessing. I pray that we may all walk in His presence
