Jacob’s Prayer
(Genesis 28:20-22)
Our lives should be a life of prayer. Prayer has the power to reshape our destiny. Today’s message reflects on the prayer offered by Jacob after he had left his home and fallen asleep at Bethel, where he received a promise from God. Just as Jacob received God’s grace through prayer, we too can witness the hand of God in our lives when we earnestly seek Him in prayer.

1. A faith that serves the one true God.
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he prayed, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey, then the LORD will be my God, and I will worship and follow Him alone” (Genesis 28:20?21). Despite living in a time of widespread idolatry, Jacob confessed his unwavering faith in the one true God. In this way, loving God with all our heart, life, and mind is a wholehearted and all-encompassing love. Yet this love did not begin with us?it began with God. He first loved us and revealed His perfect and complete love by giving His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to be crucified on our behalf. Having experienced this divine love, we are called to serve God alone and to live with a steadfast, God-centered faith that endures through every trial and persecution.

2. A faith that establishes God’s house.
Jacob took the stone he had used as a pillow, set it up as a pillar, and proclaimed that the place would be the house of God (Genesis 28:18?19). He did so because he had encountered the presence of God there and experienced the living God. The house of God is the place where His presence dwells and where His chosen people come to meet Him. God pours great blessings upon His children who leads lives centered around the church and temple. Therefore, we must first seek to become the temple of God ourselves (1 Corinthians 3:16). As we dedicate our bodies to be holy temples of God and live lives that bear the fruit of the Spirit, God's glory and blessings will be poured upon us.

3. A faith that offers a Tenth to the Lord.
Jacob made a vow to God, promising to give a tenth of all that God had provided him (Genesis 28:22). In doing so, he confessed in faith that God is the true owner of all things. As we navigate through life, we must clearly recognize the source of all blessings. When the Almighty God becomes the Lord of our lives, there is no reason for us to worry or be anxious. Moreover, God promises to pour abundant blessings on those who faithfully bring their whole tithes (Malachi 3:10). When we offer not only a tenth of our possessions but also a tenth of our time to God, His miracles and blessings will flow into our lives. Like Jacob, may we all offer a whole tithe to God, so that our souls may prosper, all things may go well with us, and we may live in blessing and good health.
