The Grace of the Resurrection
(John 20:19-23)
Jesus Christ rose again, having conquered the dominion of sin and the power of death. His resurrection stands as the greatest miracle in all of human history and a moment of immeasurable joy and amazement. All who believe in the risen Savior shall receive the gift of salvation, the privilege of becoming children of God, and the inheritance of eternal life. The words that the resurrected Lord spoke to His disciples are filled with divine comfort and hope for all who believe.
1. Peace be with you
After Jesus was crucified, the disciples, overwhelmed by fear, hid themselves behind closed doors. In the midst of their trembling, the risen Lord Himself appeared to them and spoke, saying repeatedly, “Peace be with you” (John 20:19, 21). This peace, called shalom, is not a momentary emotional relief but a profound restoration of spirit, soul, and body. The peace that Christ gives is grounded in the love of God and is a true and everlasting peace, which the world can neither give nor take away (John 14:27). Therefore, even in the midst of life’s anxieties and fears, we must earnestly pray for the fullness of Christ’s peace to dwell within us. When we do so, the Lord Himself will be with us and will rescue us from every despair.
2. Receive the Holy Spirit
When God created man, He formed him from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). In the same way, those who believe in Jesus Christ and have become a new creation must be born anew by the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, no one can truly declare that Jesus is Lord, nor can they live a vibrant and dynamic life of faith (1 Corinthians 12:3). When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are conformed to the image of Christ and enabled to faithfully carry out the mission He has entrusted to us. May we become Spirit-filled people, approved by all, who live as faithful witnesses and proclaim the love and blessing of the Lord to the ends of the earth.
3. Forgive anyone his sins
Forgiveness is the culmination of love and the perfect fulfillment of the message of the resurrection. As we have been forgiven through the immeasurable love of God, we are called to forgive one another. When we do so, the answers to our prayers and the power of God are revealed in us. The world may claim victory through strength, but the Christian triumphs through forgiveness. Even upon the cross, Jesus forgave His enemies, and Stephen, following the example of Christ's love, forgave those who stoned him (Luke 23:34; Acts 7:60). To love and forgive one’s enemies is the true path to victory, and God, who sees and remembers such a life, will reward it (Matthew 16:19). Therefore, let us cast off all hatred and resentment from our hearts, and may we live as those who forgive, under the influence and empowerment of the love of Christ.
